After a brief business meeting, join us for a screening of the award-winning 17-minute documentary Blind Sushi. The film will be followed by a tasting of Chef Bun Lai’s innovative creations featuring invasive species, and a lively conversation exploring the relationship between food, health, society, and the environment. Blind Sushi, directed by Eric Heimbold—of “Who Let the Dogs Out” music video fame—was a finalist for the James Beard Award for Best Documentary. The film follows blind travel writer Ryan Knighton, author of Cockeyed: A Memoir, and Chef Bun Lai as they dive into the murky waters of Long Island Sound in search of ingredients to create a meal that is as enlightening as it is delicious.

Described by The New York Times as “the mad scientist of the sustainable sushi movement,” Chef Bun Lai is the 2016 Obama White House Champion of Change and a James Beard Award–nominated chef—recognized as a semifinalist for Best Chef and a documentary finalist for Blind Sushi. His family’s restaurant, Miya’s—the world’s first sustainable sushi restaurant and a pioneer in sustainable seafood, plant-based sushi, and the use of invasive species—now lives on as intimate, immersive culinary adventures designed to teach and inspire through foraging, fishing, food preparation, and shared meals in harmony with nature.
