The Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff

On the same day that Willie Upton returns home to Templeton, NY (a thinly-disguised Cooperstown) in disgrace after a catastrophic affair with her PhD supervisor, a prehistoric monster surfaces from the depths of the nearby lake, bringing chaos to the town. Willie’s single mother then tells her that her father is not, as she had thought, a nameless one-night stand from San Francisco, but is instead someone from Templeton. In her quest to uncover his identity, Willie discovers some surprising things about the town’s past.
