Born to “the richest man in Philadelphia” in 1800, Alma Whittaker spends hours learning Latin and Greek and studying the natural world. But her plain appearance and her intelligence relegate her to spinsterhood until she meets gifted artist Ambrose Pike. After they marry, Alma, who has never traveled out of Philadelphia, travels from Tahiti to Holland and learns much about the ways of the world and her own complicated nature.
