Event Details
Join us to learn all about the modern history of matrimonial ceremonies! Based on the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society’s 2023 exhibition of the same name, this program will explore the evolution of wedding styles, rituals, and customs in the West over the last 150 years. We will discuss the rise of the "white wedding," the use of World War I parachutes as bridal fabric, and other historical anecdotes, along with legal changes that reflected shifting social mores. This illustrated presentation will include photographs of both the fashions and the change-makers who shaped the modern wedding. Nancy Geary, Executive Director of the New Canaan Museum, will lead this one-of-a-kind lecture!
This is a hybrid event; patrons have the option of attending either in-person at the library or virtually on Zoom. Registration is required - please sign up below!
