48-year-old struggling novelist Anthony Fennell is drinking too much and writing very little. When a magazine editor asks him to profile a crew that repairs breaks in the underwater cables carrying information across continents, he heads to South Africa to set sail with Chief of Mission John Conway and his crew after a series of ruptures in cables near Congo. And then Conway disappears. McCann’s 2025 novel is a haunting story about the relationships that connect us to one another.
